Delicious soul food served by friendly staff - the owner, I believe, took care of us. She even noticed, while delivering the food to our table, that our shrimp and grits were missing some finishing toppings (we wouldn’t have known, haha) so she took it back, quickly added the items and returned it to us. Again, we wouldn’t have known so it’s nice to see someone take such pride in their product that they want to make sure it’s just right! We were only looking for a small bite as we headed out of town after a long weekend visiting Savannah so we only tried the shrimp and grits, cabbage medley and collard greens but everything was delicious and had us wishing we ordered more... and we would have had we not been been concerned about being drowsy while embarking on a several hour drive (soul food is heavy!) We’ll definitely be going back to Simple Soul to try more next time we’re in Savannah!
What a great escape from the busyness of downtown Savannah. It's a great neighborhood restaurant with charm, character and the best of southern cooking. After you place your order, you are encouraged to visit the game library to do something interactive while you wait for your meal. We ordered fried chicken and it takes a little longer but it is so worth the wait!! The sides of coleslaw, lima beans, greens and corn bread were all deliciously homemade. We also ordered shrimp and grits with "the works" and it was some of the best flavors all in one bowl.
Amazing lunch, delicious southern soul food. It felt like the food was giving you a hug. The best food I have had in America!!!!
Kind service. Excellent truly amazing food. Neighborhood gem. Hidden treasure. Just perfect. The shrimp and grits are exceptional. The salmon perfect.
Found out about this hidden gem while waiting for carryout our first night in Savannah. Just a short walk from the purple dot bus stop at 36th & Whitaker. Ordered chicken & waffles, mac & cheese, cornbread, shrimp & grits and also tried the sweet tea and hibiscus ginger tea. Everything was delicious. My daughter said it was the best chicken she'd ever had and the waffles had a slightly sweet flavor. Mac & cheese was a creamy concoction baked to perfection. The pepper cheese with the grits was spicy but not too much to overpower the flavor. Will definitely go back again!
The true definition of a hole in the wall...but excellent food. The fried chicken was on point!! Little bit of a wait because the cooked it fresh, but absolutely worth the wait!! Don’t even get me started on the banana pudding!!
I grew up in the Midwest but spent summers in the south with my Nana Papaw, and this food was like a warm, nostalgic hug. 10/10 would recommend, probably the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. The service was also fantastic, the person who took our order was very attentive, kind and helpful. If I lived here I would definitely be a repeat customer. Thank you!
What a great find! I was on the hunt for some southern comfort food and this was the spot! Fried chicken, coleslaw, and Mac and cheese. It was all as good as I had hoped! I regret not getting the collard greens, they have to be good! Gives me a reason to go back! It’s a relatively small spot with not much else in the immediate area. But the service is great, the food is memorable, and I can’t wait to try more during my next visit!
